Expert Advice

When is it recommended to work with a recirculating chiller?

When you use a solvent like petroleum ether, a recirculating chiller should be implemented if the tap water is warmer than 15 °C. The temperature difference between the boiling point of the solvent and the cooling water temperature should be 20 - 25 °C in order to achieve a good condensation of the solvent in the condenser and to keep a good solvent recovery.

What refrigerant is used in the recirculating chiller?

The refrigerant in all BUCHI recirculating chillers is R-134a (1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane). This is a haloalcane refrigerant with thermodynamic properties similar to R-12 (dichlorodifluoromethane), but with less ozone depletion potential.

What is the recommended cooling liquid in the recirculating chiller?

The mixture on the coolant is very important. If the mixture is not correct, it may freeze in the chiller and block or destroy the pump. Therefore we recommend a mixture of ethylene glycol and water 30/70 (%V). This mixture has a freezing point of -14 ° C. As the F-100 has a fix temperature of 10 °C also water is ok.

Can the recirculating chiller be controlled by more than one vacuum controller?

The recirculating chiller has only one communication connection to a Rotavapor. If more than one Rotavapor is connected to one chiller, the chiller has to be operated by its internal control panel and cannot be controlled by the Interface of a Rotavapor.

How much heat is generated by a chiller?

The compressor in the chiller generates heat. The heat is blown out of the unit by a fan. The heat emission depends on the cooling capacity of the chiller. The heat emissions are:

  • F-100: max. 300 W
  • F-105: max. 300 W
  • F-305: max. 300 W
  • F-308: max. 500 W
  • F-314: max. 1000 W
  • F-125: max. 1800 W

In standby mode is the compressor and also the circulating pump turned off and do not generate any heat emissions.
